Coffee & Cocoa Brightening Face/Body Mask

Even though I can’t have caffeine, I LOVE coffee!  I also love cocoa, and the two together pack a mighty punch, both as a beverage (hello Mocha!) and as a beauty treatment to enhance your skin.  Coffee and cocoa masks are favored by many beauty experts because, in combination, they decrease puffiness in the face and eye area, wake up dull skin, and brighten your complexion.

WHY? Both coffee and cocoa contain caffeine, an antioxidant that acts as a stimulant. When the Coffee & Cocoa Mask is applied to skin, it improves the blood circulation and promotes radiant, healthy skin. The coffee grounds help to exfoliate any dead skin cells, leaving skin smooth and silky.  For the body, the mask acts as a cellulite scrub and helps to remove fluids and hence, diminishes cellulite.  It can be used it to tighten, brighten, and tone!

One of the reasons I love this mask is that the ingredients are probably all sitting in your pantry.  Also, you can tweak the mask depending on your skin type and what you have on hand.  While coffee and cocoa powder are the essentials in this mask, it can be tailored to your skin type by adding honey and oil if you have dry skin, or lemon juice if you have oily skin.

WHAT YOU NEED – THE INGREDIENTS:

  • 4 Tbsp. finely ground coffee beans – any kind will do (I use my own grinder, but already ground coffee also works)
  • 4 Tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 4-8 Tbsp. Dairy Product, depending on how thick you want the mask.  You can use whole milk, heavy cream, plain yogurt (I like to use greek yogurt for a thicker consistency), almond milk or coconut milk.
  • 2 Tbsp. honey (if you have dry skin) or lemon juice (if you have oily skin)

*For extra dry skin: use olive oil, coconut oil or almond oil instead of the dairy product.

*For oily skin:  Use 2 tbsp. lemon juice instead of the honey

HOW-TO:

1. Finely grind whole coffee beans in a grinder. (The beans should be finely ground so they don’t scratch your face.)  Option:  If you just made coffee, you can also use the freshly brewed coffee grounds, although they won’t contain as much caffeine.

2. Mix coffee and cocoa powder in a bowl.

3. Add the dairy product slowly and stir until a smooth paste forms.  Add as much or little as you like depending on how thick you want your mask.

4. Stir in the honey or lemon juice, depending on your skin type. (I like to warm up the honey in the microwave so it mixes easily.)

5. Apply the paste to your clean face and neck with your fingers or a brush.  Leave on for 15-20 minutes until the mask is dry. RELAX.

6. Rinse with warm water, using washcloth to loosen the mask. If you have sensitive skin, avoid rubbing your face because the coffee grounds could scratch your skin. You can store the leftover mask in an airtight container in the refrigerator for several days.

Enjoy your glowing, firmer skin!
