St. Patrick’s Day Cocktail LUCKY LEPRECHAUN

kiss me I'm irishSt. Patrick’s Day!! Time for green beer?  Not feelin’ it?  Yeah, us too.  Kinda seems un-natural and icky really the thought of drinking a lime  green anything if you didn’t make it that color naturally?  RIGHT?

If you really feel like you can’t hold back and you MUST have a green cocktail… go for this one!  The Lucky Leprechaun.  It’s a Moms Gone Zen favorite! So do St. Patty’s day right this year and serve up this cocktail!  May you come home covered in kisses… Irish or not!

Boru Vodka

2 parts of Boru Irish Vodka (Vodka)

1 small cucumber, quartered

1 small cucumber (for garnish) 

10 fresh mint leaves

3 tablespoons of fresh squeezed lime juice

1 cup of ice

1 tablespoon agave nectar

Dash of sea salt

Put cucumbers, mint and lime juice in a blender on high until well blended. Put ice, vodka, agave, and a dash of salt in a shaker. Pour cucumber mixture through a fine mesh sieve into the shaker as well. Shake well to combine and chill. Serve over ice. Garnish with sliced cucumber & fresh mint.

Cat Cora’s Bucatini Amatriciana with Bacon

The very first time I cooked for my dear friend Cat was Passover Dinner – and I was a nervous wreck.  Not only because an Iron Chef was going to be at my table, but also because I’m a “shiksa” who had NEVER before cooked a Passover meal!

With Manischewitz flowing, Passover was a success and soon after Cat cooked her first meal for me.  Bucatini Amatriciana was the super-scrumptious dish that she made and it immediately became a family favorite. My husband loves it so much that for his birthday one year she surprised him with a giant pot of this mouth-watering sauce. Get HEART healthy with the Mediterranean Diet!

Mediterranean DIET FOODSSo when I was a kid, I’d go to school with my brown paper bag lunch and I’d open it up praying for a nice PB&J sandwich only to find something that represented a pita “torpedo” sandwich that usually had something like Lebni, (think thick yogurt) crushed mint and few slices of a Persian cucumber in it…. dessert was not a Hostess cup cake… oh no, no friends, it was dried apricots. Yeah, try trading that with your school buddy.  Fat chance! 

At the time, I was absolutely mortified and wished that my Armenian roots were more like my nice American friend Suzy…who’s mom so graciously even thought to put a fruit roll up in her lunch.

In actuality, looking back my mom had it all right though.  Drawing from my Middle Eastern roots led me to grow up eating something very similar to the Mediterranean Diet.  Yes, that very same Mediterranean Diet that according to a recent study published by The New England Journal of Medicine’s Web site this past Monday, proved that about 30% of heart attacks, strokes & deaths from heart disease can be prevented if people switch to a diet rich in olive oil, nuts, beans, fish fruits & veggies… AKA The Mediterranean Diet.

1 Part Bombay Sapphire Gin
1 Dash Lemon Juice
1 Dash Cherry Brandy
1 Dash Grenadine
6 Mint Leaves

Fill a shaker with ice cubes.  Add all ingredients. Shake & strain into a chilled martini glass.  Garnish with a mint leaf. Read more »

An Apple A Day

 

A Brazilian study found that women who ate three apples per day lost more weight while dieting than women who did not eat fruit while dieting. Gotta love those Brazilians. We trust what they say… they know how to rock those bikinis! So if you feel like a snack today, reach for that apple! It’s full of fiber and will even help lower cholesterol.
